NFPA 70, National Electrical Code 2017 edition establishes mandatory requirements for the design, installation, and inspection of electrical systems across residential, commercial, and industrial settings. The 2017 cycle made significant additions addressing the rapid expansion of renewable energy technologies, energy storage systems, and distributed power generation — marking one of the most substantial updates to the NEC in years. Coverage spans Articles across wiring methods, equipment, special occupancies, special equipment, and special conditions, organized for efficient field and office reference by designers, engineers, contractors, inspectors, and AHJ officials.

Who Uses the 2017 NEC

Required by electricians, electrical engineers, electrical contractors, inspectors, and authority having jurisdiction (AHJ) officials working under the 2017 adoption cycle. Always confirm which edition is adopted in your jurisdiction before purchasing.

What's New in the 2017 Edition

The 2017 NEC introduces major additions for renewable energy, energy storage, and distributed generation systems, along with enhanced worker safety provisions, including:

  • Major additions addressing the continuing growth of renewable power technologies, including higher-voltage systems previously limited to utility-scale applications.
  • New Article 691 — Large-Scale Photovoltaic (PV) Electric Power Production Facility, covering systems producing 5 megawatts or more.
  • New Article 706 — Energy Storage Systems (ESS), governing installation, disconnection, controlled shutdown, and safety labeling requirements.
  • New Article 710 — Stand-Alone Systems, covering off-grid power production sources including PV and wind-powered systems not connected to the utility grid.
  • New Article 712 — Direct Current Microgrids, governing independent DC energy distribution networks sourcing power from DC generation and storage.
  • New Article 425 — Fixed Resistance and Electrode Industrial Process Heating Equipment.
  • Expanded coverage for privately owned wind and solar generation and distribution equipment, including a new consumer role in energy decentralization.
  • New arc flash hazard warning labeling requirements on equipment to support electrical risk assessment by workers and supervisors.
  • Revised minimum space clearances for equipment installation to protect installers and maintainers.
  • Revised AFCI and GFCI protection provisions to improve electrical and fire safety in residential applications.

Edition Advisory

The 2017 NEC is an older edition. The 2026 NEC is now available and the 2023 NEC is the most recently widely adopted cycle. Verify which edition is currently adopted in your jurisdiction before purchasing.
