NFPA 101, Life Safety Code 2018 edition establishes mandatory requirements for occupant safety in buildings across all stages of the building lifecycle — from new construction through existing structures. Coverage applies to residential, business, mercantile, health care, ambulatory health care, daycare, assembly, educational, and industrial occupancies, addressing means of egress, fire protection systems, emergency communications, hazardous materials, and building features critical to life safety. The 2018 edition significantly expanded the code's scope beyond fire-related hazards to address a broader range of life safety risks, including hazardous materials emergencies, fall injuries, and mass notification systems.

Who Uses NFPA 101

Required by fire protection engineers, architects, building officials, AHJ inspectors, life safety consultants, contractors, and facility managers responsible for code compliance across commercial, institutional, and residential occupancies. Always verify which edition is adopted in your jurisdiction before purchasing.

What's New in the 2018 Edition
