NFPA 13, Standard for the Installation of Sprinkler Systems 2025 edition establishes mandatory requirements for the design, installation, and testing of automatic sprinkler systems across occupancy types — from light hazard residential and commercial applications through ordinary and extra hazard industrial and storage occupancies. Coverage spans system types, component specifications, water supply requirements, hydraulic design, pipe sizing, sprinkler selection and placement, obstruction criteria, storage protection, seismic bracing, and acceptance testing. The 2025 edition introduces new provisions for vacuum dry pipe systems, corrosion inhibition, elevator hoistway omissions, and updated seismic load requirements aligned with current structural standards.
Who Uses NFPA 13
Required by fire protection engineers, sprinkler system designers and contractors, AHJ officials, building inspectors, and facility managers responsible for the design, installation, and acceptance of automatic sprinkler systems in new and existing buildings.
What's New in the 2025 Edition
The 2025 edition delivers technical additions and revisions across system types, sprinkler placement, storage protection, and seismic requirements, including:
- Listed vacuum dry pipe systems added to Chapter 8.
- New Chapter 7 provisions allowing vapor phase corrosion inhibitors to be added to the air supply for dry pipe and preaction systems as a corrosion reduction method.
- Several revisions to sprinkler placement criteria and allowable omissions throughout the standard.
- Chapter 4 revisions dividing miscellaneous and low-piled storage protection requirements into two separate sections.
- Chapter 9 additions allowing omission of sprinklers in elevator hoistways in most situations.
- Chapter 18 revisions updating load tables to incorporate seismic forces from piping and revising seismic coefficient (Cp) values to align with ASCE/SEI 7, with Annex E modified to allow conformance with ASCE/SEI 7 for locations outside the United States.
