NFPA 30, Flammable and Combustible Liquids Code 2018 edition establishes the mandatory requirements for safeguarding against fire and explosion hazards associated with the storage, dispensing, handling, transfer, and use of flammable and ignitible liquids. This reference covers indoor and outdoor liquid storage containers and tanks, hazardous material storage lockers, tank vehicles, piping systems, electrical systems, storage areas, wharves, and processing facilities, and is the primary code relied on by engineers, safety managers, and facility operators responsible for flammable liquid compliance.

Who Uses NFPA 30

The 2018 edition is the standard of reference for fire protection engineers, mechanical engineers, safety officers, facility managers, contractors, and authority having jurisdiction (AHJ) officials responsible for the design, installation, and operation of flammable and combustible liquid storage and handling systems in commercial, industrial, and processing environments.

What's New in the 2018 Edition

The 2018 edition introduces targeted updates and clarifications, including:

  • New definitions added to reflect current terminology used in the field.
  • Revised requirements recognizing nonmetallic intermediate bulk containers that satisfy the fire exposure test protocols of Paragraph 9.4.1.1.
  • New specific references in Subsection 9.4 to UL 2368, FM Class 6020, UL 1275, and FM Class 6050 for intermediate bulk containers and storage cabinets.
  • Completely revised requirements for general purpose warehouses, restricting storage to specific liquid and container combinations.
  • New alternative method for calculating water demand for the most hydraulically remote in-rack sprinklers in Scheme A, B, and C designs.
  • New requirement that nonmetallic cooking oil tanks be listed in accordance with UL 2152 for special purpose nonmetallic containers and tanks.
  • Numerous clarifications throughout to reduce conflicts and improve code interpretation consistency.
