NFPA 54/ANSI Z223.1, National Fuel Gas Code 2018 edition establishes the mandatory requirements for the safe design, installation, operation, maintenance, purging, and inspection of fuel gas piping systems, equipment, accessories, and appliances in residential, commercial, and industrial buildings. This reference addresses the full range of hazards associated with gaseous fuels — including fire, explosion, and carbon monoxide risks — and is the primary code relied on by mechanical engineers, plumbing contractors, gas system designers, and inspectors responsible for fuel gas system compliance.

What NFPA 54 Covers

  • Piping system design, materials, and component selection.
  • Pipe sizing and installation requirements for underground, aboveground, and concealed space applications.
  • Piping inspection, testing, system leak checks, and purging procedures.
  • Requirements for process air and appliance installation.
  • Minimum safe performance criteria, general requirements, and specifications for venting combustion products.

Who Uses NFPA 54

The 2018 edition is the standard of reference for mechanical engineers, plumbing and gas contractors, building inspectors, and authority having jurisdiction (AHJ) officials responsible for the design, installation, and inspection of fuel gas systems in residential, commercial, and industrial settings.

What's New in the 2018 Edition

The 2018 edition introduces targeted updates based on recognized risks, recent research, and current construction practices, including:

  • Revised piping requirements permitting listed arc-resistant jacket or coated corrugated stainless steel tubing (CSST) to use the appliance's electrical grounding connector as the bonding means, and recognizing stainless steel smooth wall pipe and tubing as acceptable piping materials.
  • Minimum allowed wall thickness for carbon and stainless steel pipe changed to Schedule 10, with the restriction that joints on Schedule 10 pipe cannot be made using screwed fittings.
  • Press-connect fittings added as an acceptable joining method for gas piping.
  • Updated venting requirements mandating listing to applicable UL standards for plastic venting materials, factory-built chimneys, Type B and BW vents, chimney lining systems, and special gas vents.
  • Updated direct vent clearances to building openings for appliances with inputs above 150,000 Btu (44 kW) now governed by the appliance manufacturer's installation instructions.
  • New requirement that existing gas appliance installations be inspected for combustion air and venting code compliance when the building structure is modified with air infiltration-reducing changes.

2018 Edition Advisory

NFPA 54 is updated on a regular revision cycle. The 2024 edition is the most current. Verify which edition is adopted in your jurisdiction before purchasing.

Stay compliant with the fuel gas code relied on by mechanical engineers, contractors, and inspectors across residential, commercial, and industrial applications.
