The 2017 edition introduces significant scope expansions and technical updates, including:
- All-new Chapter 12 addressing LP-Gas requirements for over-the-road vehicles incorporating the latest available technology.
- New definitions, construction requirements, transportation requirements, and location requirements for skid tanks and porta-pacs.
- Expanded scope to include hot air balloons, with requirements referencing current federal law and new guidance on liquid transfer into balloon containers.
- Revised snow load requirements for container and piping protection based on ASCE 7 calculations and snowfall maps, with the protection threshold raised to 100 lb/ft² (488 kgf/m²).
- Basic fire extinguisher requirements consolidated in Section 4.7, with individual capacity requirements retained in applicable application sections.
- Expanded appurtenance requirements in Table 5.9.4.1(B) to cover additional container types.
- Updated requirements permitting universal tanks to be filled in horizontal or vertical orientation provided the positioning slot is correctly oriented.
- New Chapter 6 requirements addressing placement of ASME tanks that have been disconnected from service.
- Removal of vehicle barrier protection (VBP) requirements for cylinders stored in metal cabinets.
- Revised VBP requirement for vehicle fuel dispensers reduced from 12,000 lb (53,375 N) to 6,000 lb (26,688 N).
