NFPA 58, Liquefied Petroleum Gas Code 2020 edition establishes the mandatory requirements for safeguarding LP-Gas (propane) installations across residential, commercial, and industrial settings. This reference covers the design, installation, operation, and maintenance of LP-Gas systems including storage containers, piping, transfer operations, and associated equipment. It is the primary code reference for designers, contractors, health and safety managers, and authority having jurisdiction (AHJ) officials responsible for LP-Gas safety compliance.

Who Uses NFPA 58

The 2020 edition is the standard of reference for mechanical engineers, LP-Gas system designers, contractors, facility safety managers, AHJ officials, and insurance professionals working with propane installations in residential, commercial, industrial, and transportation applications.

What's New in the 2020 Edition

The 2020 edition introduces technical updates reflecting advances in LP-Gas technology and current safety best practices, including:

  • New requirements for fire-resistance ratings and noncombustible materials in applicable installations.
  • New provisions permitting Schedule 10 steel piping in aboveground vapor service only, and the use of austenitic stainless steel as an approved piping material.
  • Clarification resolving conflicts between industry standards and the code for fire extinguisher selection.
  • New requirements mandating inspection of face seals on CGA 791 and CGA 797 connections prior to filling, with defined procedures for addressing defects found during inspection.
  • Revised Chapter 15, Operations and Maintenance, updated to specifically reference operations and maintenance requirements and remove unrelated installation provisions.
  • Adjusted Chapter 15 scope excluding systems regulated by more stringent US Department of Transportation operations and maintenance requirements.
