NFPA 99, Health Care Facilities Code 2018 edition establishes performance-based and prescriptive requirements for the installation, inspection, testing, and maintenance of systems and equipment in health care facilities — including hospitals, nursing homes, ambulatory care centers, and limited care settings. Coverage spans medical gas and vacuum systems, electrical systems, emergency electrical systems (EES), gas equipment, hyperbaric facilities, fire protection, and clinical communications infrastructure. The 2018 edition introduced significant reorganization and new provisions addressing risk assessment responsibilities, expanded piped medical gas source options, and dedicated requirements for dental gas and vacuum systems.

Who Uses NFPA 99

Required by health care facility engineers, medical gas system designers and installers, electrical engineers, facility managers, AHJ officials, and inspectors responsible for ITM compliance and system design in hospitals, nursing homes, and other health care occupancies. Always verify which edition is adopted in your jurisdiction before purchasing.

What's New in the 2018 Edition

The 2018 edition includes broad reorganization and new provisions across medical gas, electrical, communications, and fire protection chapters, including:

  • Revised Chapter 4 risk assessment requirements clarifying the responsibility for conducting risk assessments and determining applicable risk categories.
  • Expanded Chapter 5 to permit oxygen concentrators as central supply sources for piped medical gas systems.
  • Corrugated medical tubing added as a permitted material for medical gas and vacuum systems.
  • Complete reorganization of Chapter 6 to group related requirements and eliminate duplicated provisions across different emergency electrical system (EES) types.
  • Revised Chapter 7 now includes requirements for wireless phone and paging integration and clinical information systems.
  • Revised Chapter 14 consolidates all inspection, testing, and maintenance requirements for hyperbaric facilities into a single section.
  • New Chapter 15 — Dental Gas and Vacuum Piping Systems — dedicated to piped gas and vacuum systems for dental applications not otherwise covered under Chapter 5 medical gas requirements.
  • New fire extinguisher selection requirements in Chapter 16 for spaces unique to health care facilities.
